When
- After climbing sessions
- During climbing-specific conditioning phases
- As supplemental shoulder support work
- On low-intensity days for structural shoulder development
Starting position
- Stand in a stable upright position
- Hold light dumbbells or weight plates in both hands
- Arms relaxed by the sides
- Maintain light abdominal tension
- Keep ribs down and shoulders relaxed
Execution
- Raise the arms outward and upward in a wide arc
- Continue the movement toward an overhead position
- Maintain control throughout the full range of motion
- Lower slowly back to the starting position
- Repeat without excessive trunk movement or shoulder shrugging
Key cues
- Move smoothly and with control
- Keep ribs down
- Maintain relaxed upper traps
- Reach upward rather than simply lifting
- Prioritize shoulder control over load
Dosage
- 2–4 sets × 8–15 reps
- RPE ~3–6/10
Important
This exercise is intended to develop shoulder control and structural support rather than maximal strength.
Use relatively light loading and prioritize movement quality, scapular control, and smooth overhead mechanics throughout the movement.
