When

  • After climbing sessions
  • During strength and power-focused phases
  • As supplemental upper-body conditioning
  • Before climbing sessions as a recruitment exercise

Starting position

  • Set a bar at an appropriate height
  • Position the body underneath the bar
  • Grip slightly wider than shoulder width
  • Extend the body in a straight line
  • Heels resting on the floor
  • Maintain trunk tension before initiating movement

Execution

  • Pull explosively toward the bar
  • Accelerate throughout the pulling phase
  • Drive the elbows backward with intent
  • Bring the chest toward the bar
  • Briefly stabilize at the top position
  • Lower under control before the next repetition

Key cues

  • Move explosively
  • Pull the chest aggressively toward the bar
  • Maintain full-body tension
  • Avoid collapsing through the trunk
  • Control the lowering phase

Dosage

  • 2–5 sets × 4–10 reps
  • RPE ~5–8/10

Important

Exercise intensity is strongly affected by body angle and movement speed.

More horizontal positioning increases loading and trunk demand. Prioritize explosive intent and movement quality before increasing difficulty or volume.
