How the Aerobic Base Is Trained

TRAINING PRINCIPLES
Aerobic-base training works when force can be repeated with minimal decay while the physiological cost remains low.

This module explains the constraints that make that possible: intensity, volume, recovery, and progression. The goal is not to accumulate fatigue or chase pump, but to apply enough specific work to improve sustainable force and repeatability without turning the session into anaerobic conditioning.

Most climbers train “aerobic endurance” — but very few actually improve it.

The aerobic base is trained when force output can be repeated with minimal decay, while physiological cost remains low.

Whether this happens is determined by a small set of constraints — not by how uncomfortable a session feels.

Those constraints define whether training actually targets the aerobic system.

Core constraints of aerobic base training

1. Intensity must remain below the point of accelerating force decay

Aerobic adaptations occur when repeated contractions do not trigger a progressive drop in force output. Once decay accelerates, recovery dynamics are no longer the limiting factor — depletion is.

This boundary is individual and cannot be inferred reliably from effort perception.

2. Volume must accumulate without drift in output quality

Aerobic base is built through sustained exposure — volume matters only when force quality remains stable across the session.

If output drifts downward over time, additional volume increases fatigue without improving sustainability.

3. Recovery must preserve repeatability

The defining feature of effective aerobic training is not how much force can be produced once, but how quickly usable capacity is restored between contractions.

When recovery is insufficient, force may still be produced — but at an increasing physiological cost that undermines the intended adaptation.

If any of these are violated, training stops being aerobic — even if it feels easy.

Why “pump” is a misleading signal

Local pump reflects accumulation, not recovery capacity. Training that reliably produces pump tends to select for tolerance to fatigue rather than improvements in oxygen delivery, clearance, or re-oxygenation dynamics.

As a result, many climbers repeatedly train endurance while reinforcing the very limitation they are trying to escape.

This is why many climbers train endurance for years — without actually building an aerobic base.

Aerobic base training is not defined by how it feels — but by whether these constraints are actually satisfied.
